* * * *

Tanner wanted to ask Orlando to repeat himself, but he’d already said it twice. Having him say it a third wouldn’t change anything.

Tanner was Orlando’s mate.

He’d wanted a confirmation, but this wasn’t how he’d imagined he would get it. He’d thought he would be happy about it, but in this situation, he had no idea how to feel. He didn’t even know if he could believe Orlando. It might be a lie that Orlando was saying to try to convince Tanner to allow him to go.

Tanner shouldn’t even be considering that option, yet he was. If he really was Orlando’s mate, he wanted to know what was happening, and he supposed he should give Orlando a chance to explain. This was the worst time and place to do this, unfortunately.

Tanner was going to have to take a risk. It might mean he would be fired as an enforcer, and he didn’t know if he was ready to put his job in jeopardy.

Could he risk his mate, though?

Tanner didn’t have an answer, and he didn’t know what to do. His mate was more important than a job, even than being an enforcer. Hopefully, no other team member had noticed what was happening and Tanner would manage to get out of the situation and save both his mate and his job. Otherwise, he would have to live with the consequences of what he was about to do.

“Shift back,” he ordered.

Orlando leaned forward. He was standing in front of the window, entirely naked. In any other circumstance, Tanner would have been staring, but as it was, he couldn’t look away from Orlando’s face.

Orlando’s expression was enough to tell Tanner that he wasn’t lying. They truly were mates, and it was tearing Orlando apart to admit it.

It made Tanner angry, but it also told him he was doing the right thing. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he gave up his mate without even listening to him. That meant they needed time and space away from the other enforcers, and they weren’t going to get it now.

“Please,” Orlando repeated.

Tanner shook his head. “There’s no time to do this now. You have to swear to me that you’re going to go to my apartment.”

Orlando blinked. “What do you mean?”

“I want answers, and you’re going to give them to me. If you’re not in my apartment when I arrive later tonight, I’ll make sure the enforcers know you’re the thief. I’ll go after you myself, and I won’t let go until you’re behind bars.”

It would break Tanner’s heart, but he could hear the others walking around the house, including those who had been sent upstairs with him. They were exploring the other rooms, and eventually, someone would find him. Orlando had to be gone by the time that happened.

“You still want to talk to me?” Orlando asked.

“I want to know what’s going on. Do you have your phone on you?”

Orlando shook his head. “Not on me, no, but it’s close by.
